The Atlantic | July/August 2001 | Show-and-Tell | George Singleton

George works in South Carolina, outside Greenville, and studied in the same MFA program I went to, but some years before I did. Incredibly talented writer, who was recently featured on NPT (no link, I haven't looked). Read the story...good stuff.

Beyond the Tech Bubble

James Fallows interviews via e-mail Michael Lewis, who wrote "Next: The Future Just Happened" and "The New New Thing."

Enough, Already! Creators Strike Back at Digital Excess (washingtonpost.com)

Looking ahead to this year's convention in Boston, where more than 650 creators will gather tomorrow through Saturday, influential designers were speaking with one voice. After a decade of live-wire, cutting-edge creativity, they were talking up simplicity, humanism and grace. The words are as soft as the economy, but the thought behind them has plenty of bite: The American design revolution is off course.

JOHO - August 15, 2001

New JOHO went up on Aug 15, but I didn't manage to blog it.

Design Issues: Information Design A Graphic Designer’s Salvation

Excellent article on the transmigration (word?) of graphic designers to being information designers.

Digital Web Magazine

This month's issue is all about community.

The Big List of Headphones

I've been looking for some decent, but under $40 headphones that will travel and sound good and also cover my ears so I don't have to hear a lot of outside noise. This is a nice place...honest reviews, sometimes negative reviews of even the 'phones they sell. I really want the Grado's, but I'll probably get the Koss UR-30's. Another good spot for reviews is at Audio Review.

Goodbye Gopher

Anybody remember Gopher? I kinda miss it. Now I'm finding out I probably won't get to use this protocol again, ever... obsolescence is a cruel god.

Yahoo! News Full Coverage-Sources: Sen. Jesse Helms Won't Seek Re-Election

And there was much rejoicing. (Yes, I do live in NC.)

Grave of John Berryman

Not only is there a website called "Find a Grave" but it shows many of the gravesites in living color. No pun intended. Here's the grave of one of my favorite poets. "Nothing is ever missing."

Goodbye from the Industry Standard

Some delicate ironies in this piece, where the I.S. reports on its own demise. A couple of points where I'm not sure it's news or editorial. It's probably all both.

:::...The Royal Tenenbaums...:::

I am so looking forward to more genius from Wes & Owen. Mmmmmmm.

LiquidMedia

If the air-hockey (see below) didn't waste enough time, try this.

Ed_ad.gif 470x60 pixels

Best use of banner advertising EVER.

Modern Living

If Magritte knew Flash.

Flash Star - Website

Go there and click on the "Hockey Mania" link at bottom. Flash required. Only do this when your boss isn't looking and you feel like some serious competition.

etherbrian

My god this guy is wack. Etherbrian recently changed his entry page again. Gets more baroque every time. Beautiful. My favorite icons and backgrounds come from his clicks.

:::GUI GALAXY:::

Been days and days.... but here's something to candy your eyes with.

Bill Joy's Six Webs: A Gold Mine for Developers

Bill Joy's ideas on the various 'webs' or, in a sense, use-cases for human-internet-enabled experience. It's Java-focused, but the concept is broadly appropriate. Useful for thinking outside the box of the browser.

xrefer - search results

In spite of the fact that I keep thinking it's called "x-reefer," this is a really great resource. Here's a link for looking up one of my most-hated critic cliches.

Cartoonbank.com - Home

You can now put any NYorker cartoon on a T-shirt. It gets my cultural-elite blood all warm and snuggly just thinking about it :-) Now if I could just find that one I saw with the hooker and the Palm Pilot.....

Fired over MP3s - Tech News - CNET.com

Ob la di, ob la da . . .

At the time she was fired, Tomino said, she was told that the school had been contacted by former Beatle George Harrison's music company in regard to alleged unauthorized works in her MP3 collection.

The Professors/Song Lyrics/Foucault Funk

In case you want to be the life of the party: here are the words to the Michel Foucault Postmodern Blues. Probably not playing at a karaoke near you.

Pi

Finally watching this. I hope it's as good as everyone says, because it'll make up for the annoying grainy black & white it's filmed in.

Medical Devices Design

Apparently, digital designers aren't the only ones being called upon to create "usable" and "beautiful" designs. And they aren't the only ones having to use fluid team structures to do it.
